Pilgrim and a Piece of Cake

Look, I’ll be frank: I couldn’t put this book down.

There is a mature magic to Aimee Bender’s The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake that took me by surprise. I got the premise; I mean, the girl can taste the feelings in the food. But I don’t want to give much away, so I’ll leave you with just the recommendation to read it and to immerse yourself in a darker sensibility of the world through the eyes of a daughter, sister, and unique, accidentally knowledgeable soul.

What I also enjoyed: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The movie adapted the comic with flair and fancy, applying all the necessary nuances including info blocks, 1-ups, and the appropriate written sounds such as an exaggerated thunk! If you’re a comic book fan, or you appreciate something colorful and completely out there, go see it.

Note: I’m leaving for California in less than 24 hours. A two week vacation. Huzza!

Glad to hear you liked the book – I'm hoping to dive into it as soon as possible, but summer is almost over for me, so we'll see!

    Have fun in California! 🙂
